Co-founder Dan Scarfe’s 97-year-old grandfather’s hearing loss inspired this technology, which now has applications for anybody. The grandfather struggled to participate in family gatherings due to his hearing loss.
“Watching television with subtitles was where his granddad became most alive,” Feldman explained.
“If he like subtitles, why can’t we subtitle his life? That was the beginning of this product.”
Justin Osmond, diagnosed with profound hearing loss at age two, is one of many impressed with XRAI. Osmond is just one example of the technology’s many users.
“What’s remarkable is not only can I follow everything that she’s saying, even if I’m not looking up at her, if I have to glance down or look elsewhere, it’s all right there in front of me,” said Osmond, son of Merrill Osmond of the U.S. pop group The Osmonds.
XRAI Smart Glasses Launches a Strategic Partnership With Nreal
XRAI Glass has formed a strategic relationship with Nreal, a company founded in 2017 and based in Beijing, China that makes consumer-ready AR glasses.
The glasses will be available for purchase online by EE network subscribers for $12 up front and $42 each month for 11 months. Or at EE shops countrywide for $484 for non-EE customers. We will determine the price of the program after the public preview based on feedback from pilot users. During the public preview, the program will be free.
In the coming months, there are plans for a broader deployment across additional important devices and networks.
The basic live captioning app is presently available for free download with the assistant on fourteen different Android smartphone models. However, it is not yet compatible with iPhone. The software will be accessible for free on Apple iPhones soon, but users will have to pay for premium features themselves. Subscription fees pay for the translation services, while the glasses cost $484 separately.
