With the Airpods, Apple has created a new category of headphones: The True Wireless Headphones. And which nerd hasn’t dreamed of having a device that just speaks into your ear without anything attached to it.
The only thing is: the Apple Airpods are just fucking expensive. That’s why I was looking for an affordable but clever alternative for the
Bluetooth was the technology driver
When I was a kid, I couldn’t really imagine wireless headsets. That something was powered by batteries – OK, but for the sound transmission a cable was needed. And then there was Bluetooth. When Bluetooth came, it was the base for the first headsets without cables, but their sound was so bad. In the beginning, it was fine for telephoning, but even then it was already close to unusable because of the bad transmission. And at that time you still looked like a wannabe Gordon Gekko when you walked around with the Sony Ericsson Bluetooth headset in your ear.
The breakthrough for true sound delight was A2DP – The High Definition Audio Protocol for Bluetooth. This finally made it possible to really listen to music without cables. So on the first wireless over-ear and on-ear headsets followed and then the time of actual minimization began, first in-ear headsets connected at the neck with a cable and then Apple “with no” cable: The True Wireless.
Apple Airpods as standard at a premium price
The Apple Airpods were already a big hit, the idea with the magnet in the dock worked very well, but with far more than 100 Euro this gadget is simply too expensive, especially since they have a quite average sound.
Blitzwolf® BW-FYE4 True Wireless Stereo Headphone – Best Apple Airpod Alternative?
And this is where the Blitzwolf BW-FYE4 come into play. As the name (almost) suggests, after the quite successful Blitzwolf BW-FYE2, it is already the third generation, which kinda shows the maturity of the product.
The coolest thing about BlitzWolf BW-FYE4: The price. At Banggood, you will get the Blitzwolf for less than 40€ including shipping (but you have to wait about 2 weeks for it). At Amazon, you can get it here instantly, but at a higher price.
Packaging & Case
The Blitzwolf BW-FYE4 arrives in a neat cardboard box. The matte silver of the charging case is immediately visible when you open it. Finally, no cheap looking glossy plastic to collect your fingerprints!
And it goes on: The case is really beautiful and has a worthy feel to it trough its weight. After opening, you can remove the two earbuds, which are attached by the congenial magnetic mechanism ‘invented’ by Apple. To insert the earbuds and let them snap into place is simply a delight.
But what I didn’t really like about it is the format of the charging case – it’s just not as flat as the Airpods, so it’s a little bit uncomfortable in your pocket. But it can load the earbuds four times which is very cool.
The Earbuds themselves are smaller than the pictures might suggest, and they can be adjusted to your ears with other rubber earbuds which can be found in the package. They are very light, but of high quality, especially because they don’t shine in glossy-cheap but matt silver. They sit quite proper in my ear with the standard size.
They are even IPX4 certified and therefore splash-proof, which should be sufficient as protection against sweat.
And now for the most important thing: the sound. How do the Blitzwolf BW-FYE4 perform as an Airpod alternative? The Apple Airpods have a quite decent, mediocre sound – which is quite disappointing when considering the price. The Blitzwolf True Wireless Earbuds also have a neat mediocre sound, which is awesome looking at the price!!
Both of these are quite bassy as usual nowadays – but not as much as most other products currently exaggerate on the bass. People who prefer cheap muddy-bassy sound with maximum pump may not be as happy as people who prefer a clean reproduction and rather linear sound. I liked the mids very much and they are even above average for such small in-ears, the high frequencies are OK – they are finely separated, but could still take a bit of clarity.
But hey!! – For 40 Euro (!), the True Wireless sound is just awesome. You can get it without consideration!
Another thing about connectivity: The Blitzwolf BW-FYE4 have Bluetooth 5.0 and use a 320KBps Low Complexity Subband Codec (SBC) encoding under A2DP. With my mobile phone the connection was a blast and never had breakups – 3 hours Netflix playing without any problem. With my Microsoft Surface 3 Pro, however, there were a few micro breakups and I had to reconnect to get rid of them. But the Surface also has the same issue with other A2DB machines.
Is the “Blitzwolf® BW-FYE4 True Wireless Stereo Earphone, Bluetooth 5.0 Mini Headphone With Charging Box” (sic!) really a good Apple Airpod alternative?
It is quite unbelievable that, these (at only a fraction of the cost) earbuds can stand up to the comparison – but they really do!.
- Unbeatable price
- Good sound within the price range (Above average)
- Beautiful design (Buds & Case)
- Good running time
- Non-practical case format.
- Micro-USB connection (no USB-C)

Don’t be afraid to buy from Banggood. This is a big company in China and they are quite reliable. It just takes about one or two weeks – but I’m happy to wait that for that price.
